Our approach is built on transparency, continuous improvement of our processes and driving measurable impact. We calculate on sustainability metrics such as lifecycle CO₂e and compliance, which are updated annually to ensure continuous progress.

Documented environmental impact
Assessments with ReFlow
In collaboration with ReFlow, Wencon has conducted one full life cycle assessment (LCA) and two additional life cycle–based assessments focusing on repair-based lifetime extension in marine applications (the differences between assessment types are explained below).
The assessments compare onboard restoration using Wencon Coating Blue/White with conventional replacement under defined repair scenarios and assumptions. Each assessment is based on a functional unit of one component delivering its intended function over X years and includes material production, transport, installation, and energy use within defined system boundaries. System boundaries, geographic scope, and time horizon are defined for each scenario to reflect realistic marine operating conditions.
All calculations are carried out by ReFlow and document environmental impact and potential climate benefits under clearly defined conditions.

Circular lifetime extension
Wencon coating systems enable lifetime extension of existing equipment by up to 30 years. Onboard surface restoration avoids new manufacturing and reduces the need for virgin materials, following circularity and life cycle principles.
Documented climate benefits in defined scenarios
The full Rudderstock LCA documents a CO₂e emission reduction of 87.2% for the defined repair scenario compared to replacement. The two life cycle-based assessments for the Seawater Filter Housings, U-bolt and Pipe indicate CO₂e emission savings of approximately 52.4–87.4%, depending on the scenario and assumptions applied.
Methodological alignment
The lifetime extension model applied in the assessments follows ISO 14040/44 for conducting life cycle–based assessments. Scope 3 CO₂e savings from avoided manufacturing are reported in line with the GHG Protocol.
Strategic impact for the maritime sector
Lifetime extension through repair supports resource efficiency and reduced carbon intensity in shipping, enabling maritime companies to address Scope 3 emissions associated with avoided production of new equipment.

It is an ISO-compliant analysis covering the entire life cycle of the defined repair scenario and provides the highest level of detail and documentation.

The environmental results presented are based on defined assumptions, industry data, and selected use-case scenarios. They are intended to provide an indicative comparison of repair versus replacement using Wencon coating solutions.

Data quality
Some material compositions, quantities, and energy consumptions were estimated based on comparable products and industry data.
Results may not fully reflect actual manufacturing processes.
Carbon footprint
Focus on CO₂e only; other impacts (water, land, resource use) are not included. CO₂e is prioritised due to its climate relevance and data availability, while additional impact categories may be assessed where relevant.
