External corrosion for several years
The heating coils manifolds have been plagued by external corrosion problems for several years. Numerous initiatives using various products have been attempted to stop the corrosion, but these efforts have met with limited success. The task is to find a viable solution to this persistent problem.
Additionally, the solution must enable the crew to perform the repair without the need for special equipment, using only the accessible tools typically found on board a tanker.
The Wencon application process
Pipes heavily attacked by corrosion
Piping is heavy attacked by corrosion. Condition of valves, seems to be a lot better by
visual inspection. U-bolts to be removed, in order to lift pipes
from bearing. Purpose is to achieve free access to application.
Free access to a proper surface preparation
Free access to a proper surface penetration and a decent application, without individual
openings in the coating by every bearing point on the pipeline.
Application time
Reinforcement tape was placed with a 50% overlap while the epoxy coating was still wet. A good advice: Place a finger in the coating, that leaves a fingerprint – without sticking to your
finger. You are then ready for second layer.
Final layer and corrosion protected
Second and final layer, the Wencon 1088 Dark applied, using a brush. After ended
application, please allow minimum 12 hours curing, before opening steam valves from the
Engine Room.
Effective corrosion protection
