Repair of Suction Wells in Cargo Tank

Back in 2008, a Wencon Technician and owners crew did a repair job in Gdynia, Poland, of a suction well in a cargo tank.

The challenge

Slow down the process of wear

During docking, the plates in the suction wells of a cargo tank were renewed. Suction wells in cargo tanks are subjected to intense wear and tear due to the constant flow of abrasive cargo and sediments, which can lead to significant damage over time.

Challenge
During a recent docking, the plates in the suction wells of a cargo tank were found to be in need of renewal. Suction wells are particularly vulnerable to wear and tear due to the constant flow of abrasive cargo and sediments. This harsh environment can lead to significant damage over time, posing a major challenge in maintaining the integrity of the tank.

Solution
To address this challenge, the decision was made to protect the newly installed steel plates with a special wear-resistant coating. The chosen solution was, a now discontinued product, Wencon 1088 combined with Ceramic filler, topped with a normal tank coating to ensure maximum durability.

  1. Surface preparation: The well was chipped with a 7-layer Perago Disc to create a rough surface for better adhesion. All dust was thoroughly brushed away, and the surface was degreased using Wencon Cleaner.
  2. Adhesion enhancement: Prior to the application of the coating, Wencon Cleaner was reapplied to ensure the best possible adhesion.
  3. First layer application: Wencon 1088 was mixed and applied with a brush. After allowing it to cure for 2-3 hours, the area was ready for the second layer.
  4. Ceramic filler addition: Ceramic filler was added to the Wencon 1088, and a thick layer was applied on top of the first semi-cured layer for enhanced protection.
  5. Final coating: After a further 8-10 hours of curing time, the original tank coating was applied to complete the protection process.

This comprehensive coating process not only protected the new steel plates but also significantly slowed down the wear process. The use of Wencon 1088 with Ceramic filler provided a robust barrier against the harsh conditions inside the suction wells, ensuring the longevity and durability of the cargo tank.

Even though we do not have Wencon 1088 in our sortiment anymroe, we can still provide an optimal solution with our product range for this type of repair.
